(Ephesians 4: 22 – 24). All symptoms of alcoholism and substance abuse are caused by destructive forces within the individual’s own body and by the warping of the thinking process that occurs through substance abuse. Such common symptoms are:
1) Denial: Abuser Will blame anyone in their sphere of influence as the reason why they abuse alcohol or another substance to avoid personal responsibility. They have tremendous sense of guilt and shame about their behavior making it painful to face their responsibility. This may lead to emotional and physical isolation keeping themselves from seeking the help they so badly need.
2) Rationalization: They tend to rationalize the use of the substance saying they can handle the problem or they don’t see it as a problem. Like saying, “Don’t worry about it. I got it under control.”
*MY PART IS SCRIPTURAL RECOVERY AND THE HEALING PROCESS.*
There are three primary areas that one must sail through during the recovery process in order to achieve complete healing/deliverance & recovery. The three steps of recovery are well explained in Ephesians 4: 22 – 24
Put off the old man. Now that you are a new creature (saved), stop continuing in your former lifestyle. You must stop that harmful behavior whether it is drinking, or abusing drugs, sexual behavior or any other destructive habit. This is the first step towards recovery and healing from any form of addiction. Ephesians 4: 22
*Renewal of the mind* This is the most important step. Indeed it is the missing link in many other therapies. The tremendous sense of guilt and shame in most alcoholics and substance abusers leads to self-punishment and then self-reward, creating a complete addictive cycle. Lack of renewal of the mind will orchestrate relapse or skidding back to the harmful behavior. Ephesians 4: 23
*Put on the new man* Having put off the old man of sin, you should now put on the new man who is created after God in righteousness and true holiness (Jesus). Avoid the former lifestyle and walk in the newness of life. Let the word of God be a lamp unto your feet and a light onto your path. Living like a carnal Christian is dangerous and must be avoided by the power and enablement of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4: 24
As one continues in these three steps with all diligence and obedience, he/she will be totally healed, delivered, and restoration of all that alcohol and substance abuse had destroyed will effectively follow.
