Let’s Talk About Vaccines: Informed Immigrant

Let’s Talk About Vaccines: Informed Immigrant

Article #3 by Rev. Mrs. Wambui Njoroge, MSc.

God knows where you are as an immigrant family.  His word reads, “You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thoughts from afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways.” Psalm 139-2-3. (NKJV).

This article will address availability, vaccine hesitancy, US Immigration, and vaccines, USICS new requirement and vaccine certificate. Rights of Citizens, and What Next?  Also, I encourage you to read about the role of government in the lives of citizens from Romans 13. Tip #1: IF YOU LIVE IN THE US, READ ROMANS CHAPTER 13.

AVAILABILITY: The Covid vaccines are available for free for all adults, teenagers, and children (from Ages 5). Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have created a condition of equal access to COVID-19. DHS calls it a moral and public health imperative to make COVID-19. You do not need to produce any documentation other than your name/date of birth and answer general questions. If you are not comfortable being asked these questions IN A FACE-TO-FACE visit, book an appointment online, and answer those questions in the privacy of your residence. When you go to get a jab, take the printout with you. For me, I handed the paper to the nurse. After that, I spoke only when spoken to and I used short answers. Yes and No. I saw RELIEF AND A SMILE ON A HER FACE.  Tip #2: COVID VACCINES ARE FREE. NO STAFF WITL ASK FOR YOUR IMMIGRATION STATUS.

VACCINE HESITANCY: It is not unusual to encounter hesitancy with a new product like COVID vaccine. We are living in an unprecedented decade. There is no parallel to compare with our times.  Besides the information keep changing as new variants emerge. Being an informed immigrant is the only way to get rid of unfounded fear, and myths about the vaccines.  Arm yourself with facts about scientific research. Talk to people you trust in your community of faith. Then you will be able to make informed decisions that are right for your family. Currently, COVID-19 vaccines, and for the deadly variants like delta, and omicron are not mandatory. It is your decision to take the right steps to help reduce the spread of infection.  Tip #3: BE AN INFORMED IMMIGRANT.

US Immigration:  have been authorized to stay away from Vaccination facilities and not to collect personal data about people who get vaccinated. FEMA have made it easy that all immigrants can get a vaccine, at a facility near your home like Walmart, Health Department, Pharmacies like CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreens where you normally have your prescription medicine filled. If you do not feel comfortable going alone, request a friend or family member with you. Tip #4: IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE GOING ALONE, ASK A FRIEND TO GO WITH YOU TO THE VACCINATION SITE

Are we there yet? There is an update that requires applicants subject to the immigration medical examination to complete the COVID-19 vaccine series, one or two doses, and a Booster and provide A VACCINE CERTIFICATE to the civil surgeon before completion of the immigration medical examination.

As immigrants, we want to create a healthy community. It cannot be done by one group from Kenya, East Africa, or even Latin America. Tuko Pamoja, and we have a long journey to travel together.  We must not fight one another over vaccines, immunity, nutrition, confession and declarations of faith, and religion, and worse still political parties’ and their ideologies. Collectively, let us do all that is possible to be make sure every adult is vaccinated. Nutrition for immunity is great, freedom of speech and of religion is fantastic. For any clarification, we reach out to doctors and scientists in the community. They understand the science behind COVID vaccines. Together, let us help to build and to maintain a HEALTHY IMMIGRANT AND INFORMED COMMUNITY. Choose to get vaccinated before Spring. The African Proverb is relevant at this time, “To go quickly, you go alone. To go far, we go together” This is not a 100 Meter dash, this is more like a marathon that will define our lives. As we get ready to crossover into 2022, Some experts are saying we are headed for a COVID Tsunami. Yet we have tools to combat COVID. This then means that, the most important thing for immigrants is to make sure your family is vaccinated. The report coming through, is that the unvaccinated are 20 times more likely to die in the hospital ICU. Therefore, immigrants must understand what is at stake. Immigrants do not have mechanisms to respond to COVID, in the same manner Citizens do. Many may not afford basic medical insurance, the cost of organic foods, and the supplements as well. Even though being fully vaccinated does not exclude anyone from dying of sickness and disease, at choose prevention. Tip #5: LET US BUILD AN INFORMED AND HEALTHY IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY.

SEEKING PR OR CITIZENSHIP: USCIS Immigration has a new form to be completed by those seeking or waiting in line for PR Status. While you are waiting for the interview, make sure you are vaccinated. Tip #6: USCIS SERVICES ARE TIED TO COMPLIANCE WITH COVID VACCINATION.

RIGHTS OF CITIZENS VS RIGHT OF IMMIGRANTS: The rights of citizens are not immigrants’ rights.  If you live in the US, it is to your advantage as a Christian immigrant to read Romans Chapter 13, that clearly indicates what role the civil government plays in God’s grand scheme of things in society. Ask yourself, to what extent are Christians supposed to obey the laws of the land? Are Christians morally obligated to obey a vaccine mandate?  Yet Christians agree and accept protection from government against crimes and criminals. We accept money for our upkeep, for schools and hospitals, we accept to register our organizations with the government. You get the picture. Now ask, Does the government have any authority to establish law and order in society? How about the role of government in making sure the citizens are healthy? Well, until US reach herd immunity, do not expect me to stop persuading immigrants to do the right thing.  This is the country where many immigrants wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night, Inshallah! Tip #7: LET YOUR RIGHTS WORK IN FAVOR OF YOUR HEALTH.

What Next? The rights of citizens are not the rights of immigrants unless you are a citizen.  It is to your advantage to follow the law that is not intended to harm you. I wish I could be polite, but this is not the time to shy away because the health of others is at stake. It is time to speak up and tell immigrants to be vigilant about health. If more Christians think about our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit, then it is much easier to talk about Temple health. Whose temple are you, and how one should take care of this Temple.  Tip #8: TAKE GOOD CARE OF THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT IS IN YOU.

I have no idea why they named the variant from South Africa, Omicron. Do not read too much into Greek letters of the alphabet, and do not attempt to spiritualize them either. It is what it is for now a variant.
