Senator Kipchumba Murkomen of Elgeyo Marakwet has unveiled a list of high-profile politicians who are seeking to be Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate.

Murkomen said he learned the names during DP Ruto’s comprehensive talks with numerous stakeholders on Tuesday night, May 4, 2022, during a TV interview.

Amani National Congress (ANC) party head Musalia Mudavadi, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, Speaker Justin Muturi, and Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua are among those being considered for the running mate position, according to the Senator.

Before joining Azimio La Umoja, the DP and his team were considering Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a running mate, according to the Elgeyo Marakwet politician.

Martha Karua, the leader of the Narc Kenya Party, was also a strong contender for DP Ruto’s running partner, but she chose to support ODM party leader and Azimio La Umoja presidential flag-bearer Raila Odinga instead.

The team also discussed Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula for the position of deputy president, according to Murkomen, but the debate ended.

“I believe, in terms of people I have mentioned their names can make a fantastic deputy president. I know only one person will be considered because the presidential candidate will have various considerations to make,” he stated.

We could be surprised by the deputy president. You heard me name gentlemen, but you didn’t hear me say that our sister Alice Wahome, Anne Waiguru, and Susan Kihika were also mentioned.”

Gachagua claimed last week that the Kenya Kwanza coalition’s formula for selecting a running mate is a personal reserve of their presidential candidate, William Samoei Ruto.

He stated that the coalition had decided to delegate the duty to the Deputy President, and that they will all back his choice.

According to Gachagua, Ruto is ready to name his running mate within the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s deadlines (IEBC).

Following appeals from a group of lawmakers, including the Azimio team, the IEBC postponed the deadline from April 28 to May 16 for presidential candidates to pick their running mates.
