The charismatic and most eloquent Apostle David Karanja of Christ Harvesters Global Outreach Church in Marietta Georgia, has urged Kenyans in the Diaspora that have known leadership qualities, to consider vying for elective positions in American Government.
The man of God is not alone as the same message has been echoed by Bishop Dr. G.G. Gitahi of Kenya America Community Church, K.A.C.C. which is still in Marietta Georgia.
The two leaders may have been spiritually inspired, or thrilled after learning that two young Kenyan ladies namely Karen Gitau and Salome Sadera, were contesting for Council seats in Kennesaw and Acworth District respectively.
The two ladies live in an area which is predominantly occupied by many Kenyans most of whom, have bought luxuriant homes and living with their families there.
Apostle Karanja said that time is up for Kenyans to go for even higher positions like Mayor and Governor as that is the only way the Kenyan Community’s presence can be felt…. and the same will lead to building strong communities.
The population of Kenyans living in Georgia and especially Atlanta and its vicinity Cities according to estimates carried out by Kenyan Parents in USA in 2018 is in excess of 5,500.
That is a great number that would warrant Kenyans to emulate the Jews example who immigrated during the second world war and despite the condition they found themselves in America, they today control the economy and are well represented in Government.
The two ladies however may not be the pioneers as immigrants …,as our Somalia friends in Decatur Georgia have taken leadership positions in the council.
Immigrants of Africans decent have taken many leadership positions in America and with time many will be vying for very high positions.
Ahmed M. Hassan who is a Somali American businessman and politician is a member of the Clarkston City Council, being the first Somali to hold the position.
He is a prominent member of the Somali American community of Atlanta and was the first Somali to be elected to the Clarkston City Council.
The Somalia immigrants are way ahead of Kenya due to their unity as they already have Ilhan Omar the lady who made history as the first immigrant law maker in the congress . Omar an immigrant, who fled her civil war-torn home country of Somalia as a child is today making headlines in America with her vocal stand for Muslims and immigrants rights.
Kenyans have also been appointed in high offices elsewhere and the recent appointment was that of the 42 year old Hodgen Mainda, who recently took an oath of office to serve as the new commissioner of Commerce and Insurance in Tennessee.
He was appointed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee earlier this month.
Mr. Mainda who first moved to the US in 2008 as a rugby player, became the first Kenyan to hold such a position in the State of Tennessee, after working in government relations and business development roles in Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga.
“Mainda joins my cabinet after an outstanding career as a community leader in Chattanooga,” Governor Lee said in an announcement.
It’s the beginning and as the Apostle Karanja put it, Kenyans who are known for achieving great things, starting with sports will prove their might once they start taking elective positions in America and with time, they could be at par with the Jews.
The journey is on so don’t fear and don’t wait if you have known leadership qualities, but to do the right thing when the next elections are announced.
We fail because we do not try!
