The Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai on weekend witnessed first-hand what motorists undergo daily. He was detained by unsuspecting police officers after they caught him in a private car going home. They harassed him demanding to be bribed to release to proceed to his home. The IG of police was reportedly in a hired taxi towards his rural home along the Machakos-Kitui road at Wamunyu.
The traffic cop could not listen to any pleas when Mutyambai sought to know the problem. “Wewe mzee nyamaza ama tukuweke ndani”.
The two officers retorted since they were yet to recognize their boss clad in civilian clothes.
It is normal for roadside cops to- threaten and intimidate civilians for bribes.
The IG kept his cool, Mpesad some money to each of them to secure his and the driver’s freedom.
The following day according to the report, when he got back to Nairobi Jogoo house headquarters he immediately fired the two culprits and transferred all traffic police officers in Machakos led by county traffic commander.
