In life, most people go on believing that they know something, until one day, what they thought and believed to know is understood. And that is what my dear friend came to describe as ‘You don’t know until you know”.

I was brought up in Church going family. In our house as kids, the only time you could be at home during Church on Sunday was only if you were throwing up sick or in hospital, all other sickness had no excuse. Looking from outside, you may think that my mother was “unfit mother” but that makes me wonder what did your mother, let you get away with?

My point is that I wasn’t a stranger to the Church or Reading the Bible. Therefore;  I had read and heard many times Emmanuel means “God with us”. And I thought I knew that but had not understood “how’ oh my dear friend was right when she said” You don’t know until you know”

The moment of clarity didn’t come at a joyful time but at a desperate moment. I was caring for this lady and the routine was before ending my shift, I would take her to the restroom and on this day she refused to get up after finishing her business. After realizing there was no way of getting her to cooperate with me,   I turn to what I had learned from attending Bible Study with her. “Talking to God”. So, I just knelt there between the sink and toilet and said “LORD! I have no strength to pick this lady up and I can’t leave her here Help me help her, your word says there is nothing hard for you, I ask this in your son’s name Amen”

As soon as I got up I said to her So and so, is time to get up now, her reply was. okay!. Okay? Just like that!. I couldn’t contain myself so I cried like someone had given me bad news, but they were tears of joy. At that moment I realized my God is there with me. Then the scripture that Jesus lives in my heart come to me, Yes! God is with us Always,  even when we are making mistakes, He is there protecting us from many things we have no idea of.

He is our “ULTIMATE PROTECTOR”  as He tells us in Psalm 91:10-12 “no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Our Heavenly Father has given has guidelines to follow but unfortunately, we as humans have complicated everything.

The benefit of choosing HIM to be your Father are uncountable but seeing them, recognizing or receiving them is the problem. Our Heavenly Father is “Our Everything and NO ONE LIKE HIM ANYWHERE PERIOD” and His blessings upon those who have made Him their Heavenly Father are endless.  Therefore; we have to ESTEEM HIM and separate HIM from our daily Jokes and so forth or regarding him as our “grandmother” No offense to all grandmothers, but, in Tharaka culture, It means not someone to play with, toy, or joke with. a grandmother is someone you can toy or play with not like one’s parents.

The Bible gives us ten commandments the same Moses was given for Israelites and the first three are about God being our LORD and what not to do with His name in so many ways. 3: this one says “I SHALL NEVER TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD IN VAIN”. There and simple, but today that is never important anymore even to those who know it as Christians. Swearing by his name and about his HOLY NAME even when they know they are not telling the truth has become the way to go. But this is not how it is supposed to be. This is taking “Grace for granted”. Jokes or play about using the LORD’S name is a No No, In the book of Leviticus 19;12 says “ Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD.”

Deuteronomy 5:10-11 states, “But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generation on those who love me and obey my commands. “You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name”

And in the book of Matthew 5:34-37 says “But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one”.

Call me crazy but, I just know that  God warns us about misusing his name. We have to show respect because he is ABOVE US, I hear people say ‘I promise’ ‘How? No one knows what will happen in the next few minutes leave alone an hour or a day later only by the Grace of God.

So, how can you promise anyone anything?. I tell my kids not to say I promise or “pinky swear” which I understand is common among school kids.

The Bible says to let your answer be Yes or No and I say to people‘ God Willing’ because I can say anything but I have no power to do or be there without His Will, therefore; God willing I will do my best to honor my word.

Yes. we don’t have to do anything to earn his love but he is very clear about how we go about our lives. The Bible tells us that he is a JEALOUS GOD, then our focus should not shift from him. What he has given us to live by should be exercised.

I have come to realize that God gives us tools to prepare for what to come because he is our heavenly father and he knows the task ahead. In the book of Jeremiah 29: 11,  we learn about the plans he has for his children, therefore; before we embark on anything whether it is what he has prepared for an individual to follow or not he gives as training or experience to help us somehow.

This is why I know this. He took me to acquire knowledge from her Bible Study. He gave me the desire to attend the class. I could have seated outside and wait for her like others before me had done but He knew my desire was to be used where I was needed most and he also knew I wasn’t equipped for what was coming, therefore, he provided for the opportunity and desire to learn what I needed to provide proper care to his daughter. This lady was a walking Bible. If you had to read the Bible to have a reference you wouldn’t understand her. Her TV was set only on TBN station, she attended the Bible study every week, and she sang her favorite hymns daily. Also, her daily verse was  “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23:6) She went to dwell in the permanent house at 103 RIP my dear friend.

Here, I learned “praying” is talking to God from your heart, and how to pray. There is no particular order of talking or praying to God except that with the time you will develop a connection with him and you will also have the confidence to be at ease with him. I know you are wondering how could I have been going to Church and not know how to pray?

For one, I grew up with written prayers as a Catholic, I didn’t know that I could use my own words. two there is a difference between knowing and application. Most of the people, if I may say this don’t know how to apply what they have learned in theory. That why in health care there are two-part “Theory and practical”. In theory, the student learns and acquire knowledge of something but one has to apply it in practicals.

Two months of regular Bible study and fellowship, She stopped attending due to unavoidable circumstances and from this point, we were now homebound only to doctors only, then the day of application came.

So, you see He had prepared me without my knowledge? Knowing God is with you even when you are alone is crucial. Turn to God for stability in your life, the material acquisition is wonderful if that your desire but without God in your life “is walking in spiritual darkness”

Emmanuel! “God with us”. This will give you a smile even in the midst of disaster because If he is with you, not even storm will stand on your way. Now, if you live is storms areas follow the rules given, even although he will be with. He is still with you and he will be you through it.

Joshua 1:9  says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Always with you, an assurance of confidence that My heavenly father is watching me all the time.

There is the joy of knowing you are never alone spiritually. Isaiah says  in Isaiah 12:2 “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”

Brothers and sisters, If you have accepted Christ in your life, He lives in your heart; God assures you that you are not alone. Therefore, even if your friends or people have left you alone for whatever reason, your heavenly father has not left you. “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”!! The joy of the LORD is your strengthen.

I end by saying don’t depend on people or things to make you happy. Be happy knowing that God created you because you are IMPORTANT TO HIM and he is with you all the time.

Thank for your time,

Your sister in Christ

Domiscilla Wagner (Mrs)
